In the Folder view, not in the message-list view.

Yes, in the Horde summary view the mail-box list widget will do this.

Use Sieve, then you can manage those filters via the very-good Ingo
Horde application. They get processed by the server on delivery. If
not using an IMAP server that supports SIEVE [Cyrus!] then upgrade.

I have no idea; it is true that threading in IMP doesn't work as well as
in clients like GNOME's Evolution.

They are disabled by default (?) or can be disabled via preferences. I
also dislike clients "managing" my folders; if folders are to be managed
that is the server's job [Cyrus provides delayed expunge, purging
capability, and message expiration].

With Cyrus you can set expiration times fore messages on a per folder
basis via annotation.
