[turba] Turba Prefs addressbook error

Hi,
   I am using a preferences based addressbook w/ Turba, and a MySQL based 
preferences container.
When a user adds a new contact, it adds ok, but when they try to view it, 
they get a "You do not have permission to view this item"
error.  Setting the addressbook to public solves this, but is this the 
proper way to do it?  The sources.php.dist file states that public means 
everyone can access the addressbook,
but how would that be possible?  I am just looking for the best way to do this.
