Contact pictures work for me using mysql address book, iphone 4s and 
activesync.

I am also trying tzpush 
(http://sys4.de/en/blog/2013/11/10/address-book-sync-thunderbird-24-and-horde-5-turba-4/) 
for sync with thunderbird..
